It's impossible to do justice to the story of Whitman's life. Why even try? Instead,
here's the story from the man himself.
"I was born in New York City, NY. I spent the first 16 years of my life in
N.Y. and then my family relocated to Fontana, Calif, a small town 60 miles
east of Los Angeles.
For my last two years of high school, which was in California, I became
involved in drama and speech clubs. Even though my first opportunity to study
acting was in high school, I knew at 13 that my first choice was to be an
actor. My second choice was a short order cook, and third a garbage man.
Needless to say, I did not have to resort to plans B and C.
Shortly after my first year of college I was drafted into the Army. I spent
two years and out. Subsequently, I completed a total of three years of college,
and then circumstances dictated that I work full time. I became a counselor
in an institution for delinquent boys. After seven years as a counselor I decided
to persue my first love, acting, hence I quit the nine to five.
I became involved in several community acting workshops, and participated in
many local theater productions, the stage is still my first love. After years
of doing theater in New York and Los Angeles, about 1975 I was asked to
audition for Sandford & Son, they wanted me for one show, it developed into six
years of having fun.
The search to become a paid actor was not easy. During those "lean" years I
waited tables, picked grapes, worked on the railroad, worked in a dairy,
spent a year in Mexico, where I went to become a professional volleyball
player, none of the above lasted too long."
Yes, the early years were tough, but Whitman held strong to his dream
to be an actor. And today the world is a better place.
Here now, for your enjoyment, is a list of some of Whitman's acting credits.
